2 Peter 1:1-2

It’s very easy as a 21st century American to take a lot of stock in our own righteousness. We volunteer lots of hours. We give loads of money. We are relatively friendly to strangers we meet. We raise well adjusted families. We’re even pretty moral when we want to be. Compared to many others in this world, we’re “righteous” and we know it. And though obviously this is a good thing, it can also be a bad thing. It can lead to a more “holier than thou” attitude. It can cause us to be blind to our own deficiencies and inadequacies. And it can also tempt us to rely more on ourselves and our righteousness than on God and His righteousness in the sending of Jesus Christ! This message will explore what Peter and the Bible mean by the “righteousness of God” – and why the righteousness of Jesus Christ is truly the only thing that can bring us to God and keep us there.
